Group singing lessons for beginners and advanced

Do you want to know more about singing and your voice? Do you want to gain more confidence in singing and get power in your voice? Then the group lessons at Voicelab The Hague are something for you.

You sing in a group every week and receive guidance from an experienced singing teacher.

Why take singing lessons in a group?

Singing is wonderful. A moment away from thinking about anything else and just enjoying belting out with your favorite artist. It makes doing the dishes less boring and sounds just great in the shower. But, can you become a better singer?

You might already be singing in a choir, but hit a wall with certain notes. Or your voice gets tired very quickly while singing.

Making music in general and singing, in particular, becomes more fun when you do it with more people. Making music together gives a sense of togetherness. You can also learn a lot from each other. What you already can do, the other may not, and vice versa. Besides, it can be a big step to take private lessons directly. You might not have much time, and you’re not sure yet if singing lessons are really for you.

That’s why at Studio MusicalMente, we also offer weekly group lessons. By keeping the group small (max 6 people), you’ll always be able to hear yourself.

Who is this singing group for?

Of course, you have to love singing. But why would you take these group lessons and not, for instance, private lessons? You might have various reasons for wanting to join the group singing lessons. Here are some examples:

If you fit into one of these categories, then the group singing lessons for beginners and advanced students is your way to get started with singing. In these group lessons, you will meet others who, like you, want to improve their voices.

Which Music

In the groups we sing mainly pop music, but we also make jumps into other styles, so you can learn all sides of your voice.

What do you learn in group singing lessons?

In the singing lesson for beginners, we focus on four things: the endurance of the voice, purity, confidence in singing, and harmony.

1. Endurance

When you first start exercising, you often get exhausted quickly. This also applies when you start singing. Your voice can get tired quickly. By singing more during the lessons (and preferably also at home), you can improve your endurance while singing. This allows you to sing longer and gives more enjoyment in singing. In the lessons, we work on this with:

- technique exercises
- efficient use of your breath
- lots of focus on the voice and not just the music

2. Purity

Singing off-key is one of the biggest sins in the world of singing. However, you don’t need to be afraid of singing off-key. You just need some tools to help you hit the right note. For this, you must be aware when something is not pure. Unfortunately, this often immediately gets a negative undertone, making you feel guilty for singing off-key. That's not productive. Singing off-key occasionally is part of the process; you learn from it. Because you're singing in a group, you also have support from each other for the notes.

3. Confidence

Often I get students who either only want private lessons or only want to sing in a very large choir, because they are afraid that others will hear them (sing poorly). In a small group, you know for sure that others are going to hear you, but this is actually good. You find yourself in a safe environment where you need to step over boundaries to test the possibilities of your voice. As you gain more confidence in singing, you automatically sound much more convincing.

4. Harmony

The focus also remains on singing together. Everyone has a different sound in their voice. How can you ensure that this sounds beautiful together? What happens when you sing in unison? What happens when you sing in harmony? You get tips on how to blend your sound with other voices. This can be useful, for example, when singing in a choir.

What does a singing lesson look like?

Each singing lesson has three parts: exercises for the voice, musical exercises, and applying the exercises in a piece.

1. Exercises for the voice

Every lesson we start with the vocal warm-up, so your muscles warm up and you can immediately get used to each other. First, we do a warm-up song and then we do three simple singing exercises. You also get tips on how to efficiently use your body while singing.

2. Musical exercise

Next, we work on pitch and sound. This could be done with an exercise where one person holds a pitch while the other sings a different pitch. We can also do call and response or a rhythm exercise.

3. Singing a song

Then we study a simple song together. We look at where the difficulties lie and how we can practice those parts. This can be in unison or in harmony.
